Phehlukwayo among three uncapped players in South Africa’s ODI squads

prv_c7425_1473150159Andile Phehlukwayo, the 20-year-old Dolphins seamer, has been picked in South Africa’s One-Day International squads for the forthcoming series against Ireland and Australia. Phehlukwayo is among three new caps, alongside top-order batsman Temba Bavuma and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorious, in line for an ODI debut during the upcoming limited-overs swing for South Africa. While Phehlukwayo finds a mention in both squads, Pretorious and Bavuma have been included only for the one-off game against Ireland.

South Africa have also recalled explosive middle-order batsman David Miller following impressive displays on the A tour of Australia. Miller averaged 110 from six innings, scoring a hundred and two fifties in South Africa A’s third-place finish in quadrangular one-day cup.

“Andile was our leading wicket-taker for South Africa A in the recently concluded quadrangular series in Australia,” Linda Zondi, CSA Selection Committee Convener, said on Tuesday (September 6). “He has been knocking on the door for some time following his strong performances in last season’s Momentum One-Day Cup.

“Both he and Dwaine have shown excellent form recently and the same applies to David Miller. It remains our practice to reward players who do well at franchise and South Africa A level.

AB de Villiers, who sat out the Test series against New Zealand due to a shoulder injury, returns to skipper the side for both series. However, Cricket South Africa confirmed that both Morne Morkel and Rilee Rossouw were not considered for selection due to their ongoing recovery and rehabilitation process from respective injuries. Morkel’s absence paves the way for Dale Steyn’s inclusion in the squad to face the defending world champions, Australia.

“Morne Morkel and Rilee Rossouw were not considered for selection as they continue to recover from injury and a lack of match fitness respectively, while AB de Villiers is on track to return from the injury that kept him out of the Test Series against New Zealand,” Zondi said.

“Rossouw played two practices matches for the VKB Knights at the weekend when he batted freely but still had issues with his throwing and it will be beneficial for him to start his comeback in the four-day competition which starts early next month,” Zondi concluded.

South Africa play Ireland in Benoni on September 27 before taking on Australia in the first of the five-match series in Centurion on September 30.
